Hornady’s Neck Turning Tool is the only one at
its price range with a cutter adjustable in 1/1000"
increments to trim the outside of the case neck to
absolute uniformity.
Operation and Setup
The neck turning tool will arrive partially assembled. The cutter is factory
installed to provide the most ef cient cut and smoothest surface. The
setscrew that is next to the cutter in the body maintains the cutter’s position.
The rest of the unit is unassembled and the mandrels are sold separately.
Assembling the Case Holder
Before you begin, you should separate and clean your brass. All brass should
be sized prior to seating on mandrels in operation.
The case holder consists of four parts: two handle halves and two screws.
1. The handles should be positioned so that the U-shaped grooves are
facing one another with the thinner, turned handle ends facing opposite
directions. (See photo above left.)
2. The setscrews should pass through one hole in each of the handle
halves, and screw into the threaded hole on the other handle half.
3. Insert the head of the case between the U-shaped grooves up to the
bottom of the head and tighten the setscrews evenly until the case is
secured. Finger-tight should be suf cient.
The following are step-by-step instructions for using the Hornady Neck
Turning Tool:
1. Hold the tool in your hand so that the cutter adjustment wheel is facing up
and the cutter is pointing left.
2. Turn the cutter adjustment wheel away from you until the cutter is
retracted enough to allow suf cient room for the mandrel to be inserted
from the bottom side of the tool. (The stainless steel mandrel may
damage the edge of the cutting tool, so be careful).
3. Select the mandrel for your application and thread the mandrel into the
cutting fi xture from the bottom side. Thread the lock-ring on the end of
the mandrel for future adjustment.
4. Slip the case mouth over the mandrel and slide it down until it hits the
mandrel shoulder.
5. The length of the cut is determined by the distance from the mandrel
shoulder to the top of the cutter. Adjust the mandrel until the cutter is
properly placed to cut the entire neck of the case. Tighten the lock-ring
clockwise on the mandrel.
6. Turn the adjustment wheel toward you until the cutter is just touching the
case neck. Visually mark your position with the reference marks, and turn
the adjustment wheel away from you to retract the cutter edge from the
case neck.
7. Each mark on the adjustment wheel represents .001" of case neck
thickness. Slowly turn the adjustment wheel back toward you. For best
results, take .001" (a single mark) at a time.
8. As soon as the case touches the cutter, start turning the case holder handles
clockwise for the cutter to work properly. At the same time, push the case
down on the mandrel to obtain a good cut. You should produce shavings if
the cutter is working properly. If not, readjust the depth of the cut.
